#Trending – Dani on Paper is our 1st Cover Artist

First up I'd like to thank everyone who has participated with the Symposium event and a special thank you goes out to Vivianne and Greenport Store for sponsoring the event. A lot of this is hybrid since we had to design something versatile enough to deal with COVID-19 and the way it’s impacted society.

  • Visit Greenport Store on 686 College St

Creative Community + Productive Vibes

With our membership growing, we will be able to do more for our community like bringing in gurus to host workshops, putting up book shows more often, creating art installations, and sponsoring members’ showings. Our goal is for members not to have to worry about the payment because we will have our own space where our artists can come in, work, and exhibit.

  • Here is a video with exhibit records from two sources. (Unfortunately, there was a technical difficulty with the sound,)

The end of Phase 2

We are coming to the end of Phase 2 and have learned a lot while launching Symposium. Some highlights include getting metrics on what works and being able to present a prototype for our merchandising line, thus maturing our merchandising strategy.

Call to Artists: Symposium Book 2

I have been writing down ways to streamline the next event; this includes eliminating Patreon and bringing shops to CreativeUTO. We are also hosting an orientation session where we gather all the artists in one space to walk them through and set the tone. The first session is set for January 28th at 7 pm. Location TBD

We are looking for our $2,000 Cover Artist

We also have plans to make the purse bigger than the last one at $2,000 for the Cover Artist and $500 for the Featured Artists. We are also rewarding the artists who get the most views on our website as the artist of the month; they will receive $100

Into Phase 3.

In this phase we're going to work towards a prototype for our first book; Radical Dreams of Kindness & Equity, and here are the artists who made it.

Sistering is a multi-service agency for at-risk, socially isolated women in Toronto who are homeless or precariously housed. We have been serving this community for over 35 years, validating women’s experiences regardless of outcomes. These marginalized women come from diverse backgrounds and include: women with substance use and mental health issues; women who have experienced, or are experiencing, trauma and violence; immigrant and refugee women; women with disabilities; and women without legal status.

ASE Community Foundation,

for Black Canadians with Disabilities Is a newly formed national not-for-profit volunteer organization that aims to expand the conversations to include the intersectionality of experiences and voices of Black Canadians living with disabilities, and ultimately shift the culture to embrace the many talents and knowledge of all peoples within the Black Community. Through a strong and passionate board and volunteers, we are determined to create a hub of research and expertise to assist community organizations with their accessibility and anti-black racism challenges, as well as establish scholarships/awards and a wayfinding App ( information and services) for black Canadians with disabilities. ASE ( sounds like Ah- Shay!) is a Yoruba word (Nigerian) that means power and authority (it’s the ability to bring one’s will into manifestation or so it will be. As we continue to work towards these goals, we have established two scholarships that focus on resilience and endurance, and we are welcoming sponsors and donors. Defonte Miller Art and Music Award, ASE Community Foundation

Defonte Miller Art and Music Award, ASE Community Foundation; ASE Community Foundation, for Black Canadians with Disabilities

This award was established to acknowledge the incredible strength, resilience, and endurance, to collectively overcome great adversities. As in the case of Defonte Miller,
as with many other black Canadians living with disabilities. The goal of the Award is to provide the tools, equipment, and materials needed to pursue their artistic and/or musical careers. For example, Defonte is interested in music and in need of a Mac computer to make beats at home.

Legend, ASE Community Foundation Award

This award is being established to acknowledge individuals who contribute to peoples’ lives every day, but are not “seen” or acknowledged. Many black people with disabilities
contribute to everyday life and well-being of others, however they are rarely acknowledged for the additional challenges they overcome daily to be there to help other people, while also managing anti-black racism and ableism.

Our Commitment to Sustainable and Ethical Production

Commitment to Sustainable and Ethical Production

Here at Creative UTO we have a strong commitment to producing all of our merchandise in the most ethically and environmentally conscious way possible. In order to do this we have carefully chosen vendors that meet the following criteria:

1. Reducing emissions in line with targets established by the 2015 Paris Agreement

◦ Converting offset printing processes to LED has substantially reduced carbon footprints
◦ Large-scale solar arrays have been installed and were installing solar panels isn’t feasible, working with local providers to procure renewable energy.

2. Committing to responsible forestry

◦ Being FSC certified. Their FSC certification with NEPCON is recognized by the Rainforest Alliance and current in both the North American and European markets!
◦ To learn more about why FSC is

3. Has a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification

◦ The interior fittings in their US headquarters earned Platinum certification for LEED!
◦ Their headquarters uses 40% less water from plumbing features and 75% of the
construction materials were diverted from a landfill and reused

4. Robust recycling programs

◦ They use large exhaust systems to carry the waste to processing machines where it is bailed, ready for transport.
◦ Even their dust is compressed into pucks for ease of transportation before being sent off for recycling.
◦ In their European offices the disposable cutlery, cups, and plates are biodegradable and recyclable.

5. They hold their supply chains to the same standards

◦ They demand that their supply chain does not allow for unacceptable practices like environmental violations, child labor, slavery, or unsafe working conditions.
◦ They update their Supply Chain Transparency Discloser every year to stay current on all ethical and sustainable consumption methods.
◦ They do not use papers sourced from endangered old-growth forests, forests of exceptional conservation value, or the Amazon Basin.

6. They print-on-demand

◦ Traditional offset printing usually requires large orders in anticipation of sales. Often, any books that go unsold are destroyed. The print on demand model of book manufacturing reduces supply chain waste, greenhouse emissions, and conserves valuable natural resources.
