For our first issue, we have chosen the theme: Radical Dreams of Equity and Kindness. We acknowledge that Covid-19 has dramatically disrupted all of our lives. We see, too, that there are deep inequalities that undermine our core values and beliefs.

 

We invite all artists across media to contribute their visions of a better future. Because dreams are the first step to bring better to life.

HOW IT WORKS:

Submit your work, make sure to include a 250-word artist statement. You’ll be sent to an onboarding page when you register. You’ll receive a welcome package including promotional material and an invoice. We publish your work on our Facebook fan page, (y)our fans help us critique and add context to these pictures by leaving likes, comments, and sharing your work. Artists will be selected by our Steering Committee, an elected group of established members of the creative community and CreativeUTO members. Artists present their work onlinr. We work together to promote our creation, share profits, knowing that proceeds go to Sistering, ASE Community, and TICOT

Submission guidelines:

We accept all forms of art that relate to the theme of radical dreams of equity and kindness for a post-COVID-19 world. The art we accept includes but is not limited to:

 

  • Visually striking eye candy
  • Visual Art (drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media)
  • Photography
  • Short stories
  • Poetry
  • Other written work (personal essays, creative non-fiction, etc)
  • Performance (Dance, music, etc)
  • Art installations
  • Experimental Arts

 

The following is the definition of 1 piece:

 

  • One image of a visual piece (300 dpi PNG format or your print will be junk and may be rejected.)
  • One or multiple poems which collectively total up to 600 words (please submit in ONE file)
  • One piece of written work up to 1200 words 
  • One Video (Please submit a video in HD)
  • One audio file (for musicians, you’ll need audio quality guidelines. They will also need to submit text or an image which to accompany their work.)

 

 

For non-text works please include an accompanying artist statement on how your work connects to the theme and clearly indicate which piece it is accompanying. Up to 250 words per piece, the artist statement does not count as one of your pieces. Please verify that all submitted work is original to you. For work involving multiple parties, submissions, consent to participate must be given by all participants and artists.

 

 

We are giving away $1,200 to a cover artist and $600 to 2 featured artists

Will the world ever get back to normal? 

What is normal anyway? 

We repeat the same mistakes over and over again. We tolerate a lot of wrongs, turn a blind eye to many things. We want to live comfort and peace so we sweep these things under the rug. 

I think in the past few months we have been tested at an unprecedented scale, one crisis crescendoing into another. We're all coping with the fallout from the pandemic in different ways; these protests and riots are a reflection of a world that’s fed up.   

In this special episode of CUTO podcast, we discuss racism and the aftermath of George Floyd, compounded by the insanity of COVID 19. We discuss how we got here and how it is impacting society.

Where do we go from here? 

In this discussion, we touch on the people responsible, the economy, racism, the pros and cons of socialism, dictatorships, we try to make sense of it all. 

As a black man, there is obviously emotional weight added to these discussions. I understand I have to change the system from within but a part of me wants to go out there and riot.

This conversation, alongside others, allowed me to put my thoughts together in the blog below.

Beauty Reflections

Last year I was invited to an art show by one of the artists exhibiting at The Annex Art Party 6. Eva Frydrych has been supportive of our initiative from the start with valuable input that helped grow the community.

One of her greater contributions was the invite to Beauty Reflection; this introduced me to an art gallery on 1017 Dupont. That’s where I met Adrian, the owner. We started talking about several topics including Toronto, Toronto art, and our culture.

That's when I pitched the idea.

Melanin - Celebrating over 600 years of Black History! We've been working on making it happen ever since. We continued our discussions and since then I've explained the concept behind Creative Unicorns of Toronto and that it’s a system designed for artists to share time and resources, collaborate together and work on in-house or 3rd party projects. From The Annex Art Party 6, Beauty Reflections, to now this makes Melanin a perfect platform to collaborate and use data from this event to continue creating content.

I will take on the role of Creative Director for these projects and I’m bringing a collaborative incubator that includes Jessica Singh as Copy Editor, another Business Developer Shorty Bryenton and Salomeh Ahmadi as our Copywriter. 

As a Creative Director with an eye for Business Development and a project management background, I will oversee the project and work closely with creators to make the best version of their vision come to life

Art exhibits set the mood for a week or two animating about 1,000 Sq ft of wall space with art; presenting new themes that make statements relevant to our times. We are tapping into our inner creator and becoming more entrepreneur minded - working with the community to solve our problems together. Our goal is to help creators find who they are, embrace their passion, and evolve into creative unicorns.

 

CUTO Marketplace

Our plan is to research and develop resources that help creative entrepreneurs grow and nurture their ideas. We will host hive mind-like events, where artists, creators, and influencers can gather to learn, participate in workshops, buy and sell goods and services, and exchange skills and information.

Our main event will be an art fair featuring up to 300 creative entrepreneurs.

The best way to achieve success is through a collaborative community, beginning with the development of strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations. Through this, we will be able to combine resources, focus, and hone in on our strengths.

Partnering with Bobby Umar, an inspirational coach and five-time TEDx speaker, allows us to enrich our community with content that will help users reach their full potential. With this partnership, CreativeUTO will also be able to focus on research and business development. 

Other projects we’re developing include our respective podcasts, meetup groups, art events, and our collective services.

We made another potluck happen.

Sand falls through the hourglass. 

A grain of sand adds up to a day, days evolve into quarters, and quarters turn to years. Along the way, we accumulate more wisdom and better ways to maximize our time.

We made another potluck happen. We eat again and, this time, it’s a new group of unicorns under different circumstances. These unicorns have different needs and wants, and when it comes to building our ideas a project outline is a common denominator.

 

300 Unicorns

A two-hour event where we share our food and culture, what it means to be creative entrepreneurs, and collaborate on each other's project outlines through a design and thinking process.

 

 

A piece of our soul.

I withered down what potlucks bring to the table, what makes them unique, and I can't help but come across this one word: intimacy. 

I think of intimacy because food itself is a form of art. Chefs are equally identified as artists - creative unicorns, if you will. Chefs make consumable art that feeds us mentally and spiritually, like all artists. However, what separates them is their ability to feed the flesh.

Whether we're chefs or not, like art, all foods represent our culture, our history, a piece of who we are. We are half-past naked; it’s a piece of our souls.

It’s soul food.

 

300 Project outlines: from the foundation up

Along the way, I’ve come across amazing people who have helped in the research and development of our podcast on various levels. They’ve all contributed to helping us reach this point. 

At this point, I’ve realized that this podcast needs to embody my core strengths and, ultimately, the core of my organization (FMiMBranding) and it’s extension (CreativeUTO.ca).

That core is business development and business development starts from the foundation up. 

Much like you’ll have to dig deep to build your skyscraper, trees grow as deep as they need to be tall. The podcast needs to provide a solution that will help the demographics by making a project outline.

The purpose of this podcast is to help Unicorns develop their projects and raise funding for CUTO Marketplace: a five-day expo that brings together investors, industry professionals, influencers, vendors, artists, coders, and performers to purchase art, workshops, services, and exchange skills and information.

On today’s episode, we recorded our first set of viral videos for The Annex Art Party. We also went over the 19/20 Mediakit and ate a delicious meal. We had fruit platters, chicken, donuts, and Filipino noodles, which are always amazing to me. During dinner, we discussed how to generate more traffic for The Annex Art Party, how to sell art for $5,000, integrating cosplay, and we talked about the Unicorn Awards - amongst other things.

You end up with a two-page project outline that clearly defines your idea, the story behind it, why a customer should buy it, and the project's objections. It includes a sales funnel that clearly defines how to receive your customers and how to turn followers into buyers. The outline will also include your social media strategy for the big three: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You’d be able to implement this outline right away.

If I had to build a business infrastructure--no product, just infrastructure--then the business would have two departments: research and development.

Research gathers and interprets the info and, in my opinion, should be 60% of the business.

Development would be made up of three departments, all working in sync to process the info. Those departments are customer service, sales, and advertising. These can also be represented by people who have all three skills.

This structure can be applied to any project and it would remain a viable construct. Something as simple as starting an online business would require you to research the best way to present it, best places to host, and then you have to advertise that business. It's the same idea with a wedding, or something as simple as cooking new recipes for people. When you advertise, you have to receive the potential client and sell them on your product.

Growth Hack Marketing is the sales algorithm you develop to run your business sales and is the most viable way to know if your business is worth your time.

This workshop is designed to teach you

  • How to sell without burning yourself out 
  • Know Thyself (find your passion)
  • How to setup your value proposition
  • Keywords advertising algorithm system (KAASy)
  • How to sell yourself in 30 seconds + objections
  • Reverse engineering social media algorithms (what feeds them?)

I lost.

“Gone,” says the little voice in my head.

I’ve been sitting here in the early morning, before the night becomes the darkest and the morning sun paints the sky, fast forwarding and rewinding, asking myself what I did wrong.

My face is screwed up, eyes squinted, I'm blinking in little flickers, but the tears don’t stream.

Those ended as a result of too many Carlton smacks.

Like a street light hunched over in the lonely darkness, I'm looking down at my feet and my train of thought is splitting  like rain drops. The drops are filled with memories and a saxophone provides the soundscape, add drum rolls of thunder and water trickling to an electric rift. It’s a frequency.

There are several fears I contemplate in life. One such fear is to be the villain to my own story, and that’s what I’m trying to figure out in this moment,

“At what point did I become the villain in this story?”

The Abyss of Failing 2: Transmuting Fires to Lasers

Like batteries, we are energy trapped in a body designed to attract, store, and conduct it.  We absorb everything around us whether we want to or not; our brains interpret the energy based on our own knowledge. Consumption goes far beyond the food we eat, it’s the environment we’re in, the media we take in, and the people around us, which sums up the things we think about.

What we think about is a self-fulfilling cycle, our own prophecies: the spells we weave together.

It makes us who we are.

It’s why we are.

Some of us absorb energy at a faster rate than others, and to some of us the overwhelming amount of energy can overcome us and cripple us. Some of us need beds to reset, others need asylums. To most people we are known as introverted, selfish; we have problems, and we have mental health issues. 

As empaths, we have to learn the hard way about absorbing people's energies; I know absorbing the wrong energies (not necessarily negative energy) can lead to negative outcomes when we least expect it to. In my world, where I work hard, I try not to put too much value in material things as I sometimes fear the energies embedded in them.

“To want” can be a distraction, and wanting the wrong things can make us suffer.

But she is my friend.

Insight – The Abyss of Failing Someone

It took me years to learn this.

I've said it before. I wanted reasons to be lifetimes and therefore made my life toxic; I sold myself short because I am toxic. It took years to overwrite and erase that toxic energy and it needed a key called accountability to unlock it.

I made all the choices that got me here!

Overwriting the toxic energy means we need to accept our faults within our story. We need to take heed to what we represented, even if it’s not our fault. When we clear all the stages of grief, we’ll need to find the neural pathways that govern us today and write over them. Doing this costs energy or better yet, it costs MANA.

There have been times I had to meditate for days, shifting through the raindrops, taking the pictures they contain and overwriting them.

And sometimes letting go of one person, one thing, or one happening, means having to let go of 10 others.

Gone.

I lost.

But she is my friend.

The gauntlet.

The gauntlet is the business and all the intangibles that come with it. The gauntlet is a filter that is rewarding in the same way as working out; it prepares the foundation for all growth.

As a student of the gauntlet, studying the beast is a given. Through my studies I've come to understand that it’s an ongoing recruitment process, and that recruitment process is an ongoing trial by fire. You have to workout to keep up with the daily grind.

Success comes to those who try fast and fail faster, only to re up and learn faster. Cycles such as these are embedded in all existence, minutes turn to hours, hours turn to days. We sleep, we wake, we cycle in order to do everything, even something as simple as tying our shoe laces needs loops.

Creative Unicorns of Toronto use an agile based system to turn ideas into projects that serve the community.

Insight - Who We Are?

Success is 99% planning, 75% course correction, and 1% execution. Most business people have it backward, wasting 99% of their time executing and course correcting a plan that was only 1% of the project. The key to success is knowing that everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.

Success is a filter that only a few get to because it requires so much self-reflection. Often you find yourself (an abstract identity) in a world designed to be linear. The largest component of success is crashing through the fear barrier; an experience we have to go through countless times in life. Every time it’s the same butterflies in our stomach.

This is our journey; we get to stay who we are, maximize our skills and evolve.

On our way through our journey collecting experiences as Unicorns, some of us will evolve before the initial meetup, some of us do so throughout the work process. After this comes the profit, the eventual losses, the downtimes, and the good times when everything looks up. There will be buyouts, celebrations, losses, we will feel down from disappointments, acquisitions mergers, and other evolutions along our journeys.
